Lesson 8 How and why do authoritarian regimes operate as they do?

This lesson will introduce you to authoritarian governments and acquaint you with the forms they take as well as the common characteristics they share. It will provide you an opportunity to compare how authoritarian regimes operate. In this lesson you will also explore case studies of two particular kinds of authoritarian governments: dynastic and theocratic.

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Explain how and why authoritarian governments come to power and evaluate the ways in which they govern.
  • Compare communist, fascist, military, dynastic, and theocratic regimes.
  • Discuss the likelihood of new authoritarian regimes coming to power in the future.
